「I feel honored that the readers of This Is Horror have chosen Cthulhu Fhtagn! as the Anthology of the Year」(訳: 「This Is Horrorの読者が『Cthulhu Fhtagn!』 公式商品ページの帯にも「THIS IS HORROR ANTHOLOGY OF THE YEAR 2015!」
「In his house at R’lyeh, Cthulhu waits dreaming… What are the dreams that monsters dream? When will the stars grow right? Where are the sunken temples in which the dreamers dwell? How will it all change when they come home?」(訳: 「ルルイエの館で、クトゥルフは夢を見ながら待っている…… 続けて「Cthulhu Fhtagn! features nineteen weird tales inspired by H. P. Lovecraft.」(訳: 「『Cthulhu Fhtagn!』

編者Lockhartが書いた序文のタイトル自体が「In His House at R’lyeh…」 「if you slightly rasp the final syllable, it means ‘Cthulhu’s home’」(訳: 「最後の音節をわずかにかすれさせて発音すると、それは『クトゥルフの家』を意味する」)[3]。 「Of hundreds of stories I read, the stories I loved … all shared a common thread. Houses – and the expectations and definitions of home – figure loomingly in these stories.」(訳: 「読んだ数百篇の物語のうち、私が気に入った作品には……
「a few of the stories … just do not rise above the level of generic Yog-Sothothery」(訳: 「一部の作品は……
Laird Barronの「Don’t Make Me Assume My Ultimate Form」は「a superb example」(訳: 「見事な一例」)とされ、「not a tentacle or a Capitalized Unpronounceable Sanity-Busting Deity in view, but plenty of utterly original and unsettling Frikkin Weird Stuff」(訳: 「触手も、大文字表記の発音不能な正気を破壊する神格も出てこないが、まったく独自で不穏な『とんでもなく奇妙な代物』には事欠かない」)と評された[3]。ほかにCody Goodfellowの「Green Revolution」(「unbelievable, hallucinogenic」訳: 「信じがたいほど幻覚的」)、Anya Martinの「The Prince of Lyghes」(「creepy piece of unhinged domestic abuse」訳: 「箍の外れた家庭内虐待を描いた不気味な一篇」)、Scott R. Jonesの「Assemblage Point」(「blacker-than-dark pilgrimage」訳: 「闇よりなお暗い巡礼行」)が名指しで称賛されている[3]。
Fantasy Literatureの評として「if R’lyeh isn’t rising fast enough for you … the Cthulhu Fhtagn! anthology will get you through until the madness begins.」(訳: 「もしルルイエの浮上が待ちきれないなら……『Cthulhu Fhtagn!』アンソロジーが、狂気が始まるまでのあいだ引っ張っていってくれるだろう」)、Muzzleland Pressの評として「This book shows us some of the best that pastiche, tribute, and evolution of the Lovecraftian Weird Tale can offer.」(訳: 「この本は、ラヴクラフト的奇妙小説のパスティーシュ・オマージュ・進化形が差し出しうる、最良の部類を私たちに見せてくれる」)という評が並んでいる[2]。
同ページは、Lockhartが本作以前に手がけたアンソロジーとして『The Book of Cthulhu I and II』『Tales of Jack the Ripper』『The Children of Old Leech: A Tribute to the Carnivorous Cosmos of Laird Barron』(Justin Steeleとの共編)『Giallo Fantastique』の名を挙げている[1]。このうち『The Children of Old Leech』は、本作にも寄稿しているLaird Barronへのオマージュ選集であり、TeleReadの書評もBarronの作品を「subject of Lockhart’s own tribute anthology The Children of Old Leech」(訳: 「Lockhart自身によるオマージュ・アンソロジー『The Children of Old Leech』の主題」)と位置づけて紹介している[3][1]。
『Cthulhu Fhtagn!』
なお『The Necronomicon: Tales of Eldritch Horror from the Masters of the Genre』(Sirius/Arcturus Publishing)のように、神話由来の書名を掲げながら中身はラヴクラフト以前の先行世代の作品を再録した書物も、当サイトは別記事で扱っている[8]。
