概要
H・P・ラヴクラフトとE・ホフマン・プライスの共作『銀の鍵の門を越えて』(1934年発表)に登場する境界。ランドルフ・カーターが銀の鍵で開く「第一の門」の、さらに先にある。
原典は銀の鍵の働きを「時空の壮大な回廊を自由に進むことを阻む幾重もの扉を開く」ものと説明しており[1]、門はひとつではない。第一の門を抜けた先で案内役となるのがウムル・アト＝タウィルであり、その導きによってカーターは窮極の門を通過する。
原典での描写
第一の門と窮極の門の違い
「銀の鍵の門を越えて」の地の文は、カーターがそれ以前に開いていた門と窮極の門を明確に分けて説明する。
“A gate had been unlocked—not indeed the Ultimate Gate, but one leading from earth and time to that extension of earth which is outside time, and from which in turn the Ultimate Gate leads fearsomely and perilously to the Last Void which is outside all earths, all universes, and all matter.”(訳: 「一つの門が解錠されていた——窮極の門そのものではなく、地球と時間から、時間の外にある地球の延長へと通じる門であり、そこからさらに窮極の門が、恐ろしくも危うく、あらゆる地球・あらゆる宇宙・あらゆる物質の外にある最終の空虚へと導く」)[5]
案内役自身の言葉も、両者を段階として区切って告げる。
“You have the Key, and have unlocked the First Gate. Now the Ultimate Gate is ready for your trial.”(訳: 「お前は鍵を手にし、第一の門を開いた。いま、窮極の門がお前の試練のために整っている」)[6]
案内役「最も古きもの」とウムル・アト＝タウィル
門の前に立つ案内役は、まず固有名を名乗らず「最も古きもの」として自らを示す。
“I am indeed that Most Ancient One,” said the Guide, “of whom you know. We have awaited you—the Ancient Ones and I.”(訳: 「いかにも、私はお前の知るあの最も古きものだ」と案内役は言った。「我々は——古き者たちと私は——お前を待っていた」)[7]
ここに引いた「窮極の門」がらみの場面のなかでは、案内役の名が「ウムル・アト＝タウィル」として一度だけ記される。カーターが窮極の門を精確に開けるよう、この者の力によって、第一の門の内側で自我が砕ける衝撃があらかじめ抑えられていたという文脈でのことである[8]。
門を通過した直後に見たもの
窮極の門をくぐった瞬間、カーターの背後には門がひとつではなく現れる。
“Glancing backward, he saw not one gate alone, but a multiplicity of gates, at some of which clamoured Forms he strove not to remember.”(訳: 「振り返ると、そこにあったのは一つの門ではなく無数の門であり、いくつかの門には思い出すまいとする「形態」がひしめいていた」)[9]
三人目のランドルフ・カーター
自分が多数であるという発見には、原典が数え上げる具体的な内訳がある。
“Here, too, was a third Randolph Carter in the unknown and formless cosmic abyss beyond the Ultimate Gate. And elsewhere, in a chaos of scenes whose infinite multiplicity and monstrous diversity brought him close to the brink of madness, were a limitless confusion of beings which he knew were as much himself as the local manifestation now beyond the Ultimate Gate.”(訳: 「そこにもまた、窮極の門の彼方にある、名も形もない宇宙の深淵に、三人目のランドルフ・カーターがいた。そしてほかの場所には、限りない多様性と怪異な相違ゆえに彼を狂気の淵まで追いやるような光景の混沌のなかに、窮極の門の彼方にいまある局所的な顕現と同じくらい自分自身だと知っている、無数の存在の混乱があった」)[10]
ボストンのランドルフ・カーターであった記憶を持ちながら、自分がその者だったのか、それとも別の者だったのか、確信が持てなくなる。
“He knew that there had been a Randolph Carter of Boston, yet could not be sure whether he—the fragment or facet of an earthly entity beyond the Ultimate Gate—had been that one or some other.”(訳: 「ボストンのランドルフ・カーターが存在したことは知っていた。しかし彼——窮極の門の彼方にある地球的実体の断片、あるいは一面——が、その者であったのか、それとも別の者であったのか、確信を持てなかった」)[11]

通過すると何が起きるか
原典が書いているのは、力の獲得ではない。自己認識の崩壊である。
“Now, beyond the Ultimate Gateway, he realised in a moment of consuming fright that he was not one person, but many persons.”(訳: 「いま、窮極の門の向こうで、彼は身を灼くような恐怖のうちに悟った——自分は一人の人物ではなく、多数の人物であったのだと」)[2]
自分が単一の個体ではなかったと知る。これがこの門の効果として原典に書かれている唯一の事柄と言ってよい。この認識の後、カーターの意識はヤディスの存在ザカイクルスの体に置かれ、地球へ帰る長い道のりが始まる。
門の向こうにいるもの
窮極の門の先にある存在について、原典はこう書く。
“It was an All-in-One and One-in-All of limitless being and self—not merely a thing of one Space-Time continuum, but allied to the ultimate animating essence of existence’s whole unbounded sweep”(訳: 「それは限りなき存在と自己の、全にして一、一にして全であった——ただ一つの時空連続体に属するものではなく、存在の果てなき広がり全体を生かす究極の本質に連なるものだった」)[3]
そのうえで、名前が仮に置かれる。
“It was perhaps that which certain secret cults of earth have whispered of as YOG-SOTHOTH, and which has been a deity under other names”(訳: 「それはおそらく、地上のある種の秘密の教団がヨグ＝ソトースと囁いてきたものであり、別の名のもとで神とされてきたものだった」)[4]
「おそらく(perhaps)」と書かれている点は見落とされやすい。原典は窮極の門の先の存在をヨグ＝ソトースだと断定していない。地上の教団がそう呼んできたらしい、という距離の取り方である。
性質と影響
「ダニッチの怪」でヨグ＝ソトースが「門であり、鍵であり、門の守護者」と描写されることと合わせると、この作品の門はヨグ＝ソトースそのものの別の面とも読める。門を通ることと、門である存在に会うことが分かちがたい。
なお、この門を巡る一連の設定は、共作者E・ホフマン・プライスの提案が神話の背後にある論理を説明する方向へ作品を動かした結果とされる。宇宙的恐怖を「説明しない」ことで成立させてきたラヴクラフト作品の中で、異例に説明的な一篇になっている。
